The Runde treasure - Opening of a new exhibition July 5
One July day 50 years ago, 3 divers found what was at that time the world's largest gold treasure on the seabed, just outside Runde. The ship Akerendam, which was supposed to sail to Batavia (Jakarta), had then been laying hidden and forgotten in the sea for almost 250 years, after it sank during a storm in 1725.
The story of the Runde Treasure is a fantastic story, but at the same time also that of a human tragedy, where all 200 people on board died in the shipwreck.
In the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the treasure, a completely new exhibition has been built, which shows parts of what was found in the time after the discovery, and stories about this.
